When North Carolina moms Melanie and Vanessa Iris Roy took to Instagram to share some side-by-side pregnancy photos, they had no idea the series of images would go viral. The lesbian couple had back-to-back pregnancies, with each of the mothers carrying a child.
The Huffington Post reports that each of the mothers had a desire to be pregnant. Therefore, the couple decided that each of them would carry a child that they would raise together. Vanessa carried the couple’s first child, son Jax. Melanie then carried their daughter, Ero. The couple took photos of Vanessa during her pregnancy and then recreated those same images with Melanie pregnant. They then placed the photos side-by-side which resulted in the viral image series.
The couple says they had no idea that the images would go viral and are still “in shock” over the whole ordeal.
“It’s crazy to see that people were referring to my family as an inspiration. We are still in complete shock.”
The couple says that they hope their viral photos will help encourage other women, lesbian or not, to carry children as it is amazing what the female body can do.
“Vanessa and I have always said we would both like to carry. The woman’s body is incredible. The way it creates and grows another human being is amazing. We hope that our picture is that sign that some women may need to encourage them to carry a child.”
The images were originally uploaded to Melanie’s Instagram account back in February. However, a number of lesbian advocacy groups have since shared the photos, hence the couple’s recent viral fame.

Though the couple has been showered with praises from the LGBT community, the couple is also receiving well-wishes from heterosexual couples who say the women are an inspiration to all.
