Valve Isn’t Coming Out With a Console Anytime Soon

Early this month, a report from The Verge said that Valve is working on a console–a set-top gaming box of sorts that the report dubbed the “Steam Box“. While a console from one of the most successful PC developers certainly sounds interesting, you shouldn’t hold your breath.

In a statement to Kotaku, Doug Lombardi, Valve’s marketing director, said that while Valve is working on a number of things right now, the company has no plans to launch a console anytime soon.

“We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on,” Lombardi said. “We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount.

“All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.”

A console from Valve may not be in the cards in the foreseeable future, but Lombardi left open the possibility that Valve could come out with a console eventually. When asked if Valve aims to come out with hardware of its own, even if it’s not in the near future, Lombardi replied, “I think that’s accurate.”
