Brandy Norwood, songbird, was chosen for the part of Roxie Hart in Chicago, one of many famous Broadway shows. Confidently, the producer quoted that “her time has come.”
In the music industry, Brandy is known for her incredibly unique singing talent and style. Many have attempted to copy her methods but rarely have produced the same results. When you hear Norwood’s music, it’s just something different.
That could’ve possibly been the idea behind her gaining the Chicago lead role on Broadway. Since accepting the part, Brandy has been practicing hard. As can be seen from the above video, Norwood’s Chicago rehearsals are intense. They have to be just as intense as the stage performance, which begins on April 28, 2015 — according to an interview with Broadway.com. After a preview for the entertainment medium, the reporter asked how Brandy was feeling after having “wowed” everyone.
“I feel awesome! It just felt like all of you were rooting for me, and you really wanted me to do well. And when you feel that kind of energy, [you know] I can give more. I made a few mistakes, and y’all didn’t even know.
“I love Chicago. I saw it when Usher played Billy Flynn. And I just love the show. I love the movie, and I think it’s just a great story. It’s fun. And when they asked me to be Roxie, I was like… ‘Hell yeah…’ yes!”
According to Broadway.com, this play is more than just a successful musical performance.
“Chicago is the longest-running American musical on Broadway and is the winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations. Chicago is an electrifying tale of greed, murder and show biz that’s been seen by over 20 million people worldwide.”
Brandy Norwood has been singing since she was a little girl, and her voice is well-seasoned to handle the demands of the stage. Producer Barry Weissler shared his perspective on Norwood’s music and character.
“Oh, Brandy. Her time has come. She’s got the appeal, the sexuality, the humor. She sings and dances up a storm. And that charisma, that’s what we look for in our show. Talent, yes. But that charisma and personality is a must.”
Other cast members say that Brandy’s personality is infectious and everyone there can feel her joy — mentioning that it’s good to get a fresh perspective of the show again.
While the rehearsals are winding down to the show’s upcoming premiere, Norwood says that it’s a lot of fun.
“What’s been fun about it is because I’ve never done it. And so, everything is new. Every day is a new thing that I’m doing. A new step. A new way to do a line. A new, you know, mark on the stage. A new ‘something’ to learn, and I love that. I’m adventurous, and life is boring when you do the same stuff all the time. So, this is new. Every day is new, and it’s fresh.”
As Brandy continues the interview, she says that she hopes her fans enjoy the show and continue to support her. Norwood mentions that she hopes they believe in her more and more, because she knows she’s going to love theater.
