Report: Drew Brees “Livid” About Franchise Tag

Drew Brees, who was put on the spot with the Franchise Tag by the New Orleans Saints against his wishes this week, was more than pissed.

Drew Brees is “livid” about being franchise tagged and not receiving a long-term contract, according to WIST-AM in New Orleans. The station cited sources close to the quarterback who said he doesn’t plan on signing the franchise deal. The team and Brees still have until July 15th to hammer out a long term deal.

The franchise tag carries with it a $14.4 million dollar salary for one year. The Franchise Tag was designed to prevent stars from constantly leaving small town clubs for big market teams.

The Saints are widely believed to be acting very strange way. The are antagonizing the one player who has been their most solid and has broken more records than any Saint in history. Brees is not the player you want to piss off too.

I just can’t picture the Saints ? even with as poorly as they’ve handled this so far ? doing something as insane as letting Brees go. He is, by any definition of the word, elite. Guys like him are supposed to make tons of money.

There are several options that can happen now. Brees can refuse to sign the Franchise deal and hold out not playing the season. He can play out the one year deal and walk away at the end. Maybe the Saints start the year with Chase Daniels at quarterback and relive the glory days from 1984-2005.

Do the Saints and Drew Brees come to a contract or do they part ways?
