Kirk Cameron Was ‘Honest,’ Piers Morgan Says After Controversial Interview

Last week, 80’s heartthrob Kirk Cameron reluctantly but honestly disclosed his opposition to gay marriage on Piers Morgan’s CNN show, and the comments caused a stir and got Cameron more attention than he has had since his last Tiger Beat cover.

Cameron didn’t broach the subject himself, and it was obvious watching that he didn’t want to really get into the whole gay marriage debate. But once he did, Cameron went HAM on it, explaining that he doesn’t wish to see marriage “redefined” by the passage of gay marriage bills in states across the US. Plainly, Cameron stated:

“Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don’t think anyone else should either… So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don’t.”

The comments predictably created a large backlash, pitting Cameron against both public opinion and gay advocacy groups like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, who condemned the former sitcom star’s remarks as out of step. But host Piers Morgan, although clearly not in agreement with Cameron, has defended the actor’s choice to speak out against gay marriage and called the move “brave.” Morgan said:

“I felt that he was honest to what he believed, and I don’t think he was expecting the furor that it created… I don’t think ‘I’ was- it’s been trending worldwide on Twitter for 25 hours.”
