‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’: Mark Ruffalo Discusses ‘Planet Hulk’ And Post-‘Avengers 2’ Possibilities

Ever since Mark Ruffalo turned heads as the Hulk in 2012’s The Avengers, there’s been all sorts of talk about making another solo film for the green giant. Sure, it’s already been tried twice unsuccessfully (once with Ang Lee’s Hulk in 2003 and another time in Louis Leterrier’s Incredible Hulk in 2008), but with Ruffalo taking on the role of Bruce Banner, many fans feel they’ve finally done right by the character. Among all the rumors, the biggest one without a doubt has been a Planet Hulk movie.

For those unfamiliar with Planet Hulk, it’s a comic storyline where the Avengers opt to send Hulk out in to space, thinking he’s too dangerous for Earth. The story chronicles his rise to power on Sakaar and his desire to get revenge on the ones who jettisoned him to the violent planet.

If you don’t want to potentially be spoiled for Avengers: Age Of Ultron, now’s the time to stop reading.

SPOILER ALERT for Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

From what we know from the trailers, there is a huge Hulk vs Iron Man fight, but we were never sure if that’s indeed a fight that leads to Hulk’s getting launched into space.

In an interview with IGN, actor Mark Ruffalo re-opens Planet Hulk as a possibility for the future.

Mark Ruffalo: “I think there’s a lot of places to go with him [Hulk].”

Scarlett Johansson: “Like where?”

IGN: “Space?”

Ruffalo: “Well he’s going to space. Yeah, I mean there’s some talk of maybe Planet Hulk.”

IGN: “Would you like to see that?”

Ruffalo: “I’d be completely interested in entertaining that.”

Johansson: “Do they have a Starbucks there? That’s what I want to know.”

Ruffalo: [Laughs] “They don’t. It’s pretty bleak.”

So from the sound of it, Hulk will indeed be making his way into space. While he didn’t clarify that Hulk would be sent into space in Avengers 2, it may be a safe assumption, since Ruffalo hasn’t been confirmed for Captain America: Civil War. All that aside, Marvel has been saying since the very beginning that they have no such plans. Last July, Marvel head Kevin Feige quashed rumors of Planet Hulk.

“I think what’s cool about the Planet Hulk story is it’s all Hulk. He’s a gladiator, he’s fighting all these creatures on another world. Yes, some of those creatures show up in [Guardians of the Galaxy], which makes people think, ‘Oh, maybe it could exist.’ And maybe it could exist, someday. I don’t think that’s the first place we would go though for the very reason that you stated, which is, if we were ever able to do a standalone Hulk movie, 60 percent of the fun would be seeing Mark Ruffalo leading a Marvel movie — and that’s what we would do if we ever went down that road.”

Guardians of the Galaxy
Will the Guardians of the Galaxy run into Hulk in their next film?

All the same, rumors are surrounding Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, with many fans believing it’ll double as a Planet Hulk film, with the Guardians running into Banner on Sakaar. As great of an idea that is for Guardians 2, director James Gunn has flat-out denied these claims.

At the very least we know that if the possibility should arise, Mark Ruffalo is willing to give it a shot. Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.
