‘New Girl’ Gets Fifth Season Renewal

It is the time of year for TV shows to get renewed or cancelled, and New Girl has just been given some good news. The comedy program has been given a fifth season, joining the likes of 2 Broke Girls, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural to be renewed for the 2015-2016 season.

The Hollywood Reporter made it clear that Fox decided it was not really up for discussion. According to David Madden, the entertainment president for the Fox Broadcasting Company, the program is “one of the smartest and most relatable comedies” currently on air. It makes sense to renew it for another year. In his statement, Madden went on commend the writing team for its hard work on the show.

“Four seasons in, New Girl continues to be one of the smartest and most relatable comedies on television. The writing is razor-sharp, the ensemble is consistently hilarious, and we couldn’t be more proud of Liz Meriwether, Brett Baer, Dave Finkel and the entire New Girl team. We absolutely love this show and we’re so excited to bring it back for season five.”

The renewal will mean that New Girl will see its 100th episode, not an easy feat anymore. 2 Broke Girls was confirmed for renewal last month and will also see its 100th episode aired during the new season.

There were some questions over the renewal due to the rating. It is low at 4.4 million overall viewers on average this season. However, reaching that 100th episode milestone seems to have pushed it in the right direction.

There are some special guest appearances coming up on New Girl before the season finale in a few weeks. Golf reports that Holly Sonders tweeted that she would be appearing in tonight’s episode in a cameo role. According to the tweet, they will be hitting the golf course during the episode and it will air shortly before she covers the U.S. Open. She did hint that this would be happening two months ago.

She will not be the first sports face to be in the show. NFL Defensive J.J. Watt starred in last week’s episode where he sang about hot dogs. Likewise, other celebrities have done guest appearances on New Girl, including Jessica Biel.

It appears that the main line-up will not change for the show. Some TV shows are seeing a change to their main cast members, with new reports today stating The Vampire Diaries will be saying goodbye to female lead Nina Dobrev. New Girl fans will be happy to know that Zooey Deschanel has not plans on leaving the role of Jess right now, since the show would not likely continue without her character. The only character set to say goodbye on the show this year is Damon Wayans Jr, who plays Coach. He originally stared in the pilot episode and then came in as a special guest star in Season 3. In Season 4 he was given a series regular role and will continue his role until the end of the New Girl season.
