Avril Lavigne opened up about the health scare that she vaguely mentioned to her fans back in December. The singer revealed to PEOPLE magazine that she has Lyme disease. Avril talked about the disease, which kept her bedridden for several months.
The singer also graced the cover of this week’s tabloid with the headline, “I Thought I Was Dying.”
Lavigne was diagnosed with Lyme disease after her 30th birthday trip to Las Vegas in October when she didn’t feel well, according to Billboard.com. The “Hello Kitty” singer said, “I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months.” Lavigne recalled that even her friends asked her if she was feeling okay. “My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”
The musician also admitted that she felt exhausted and lightheaded, which are common symptoms of Lyme disease. She believes that she got the disease from a tick bite in the spring of 2014, according to E! Online.
Avril is currently recovering from the gripping disease at her home in Ontario. Both her mother and her husband Chad Kroeger has been caring for her, says the news source. In fact, Avril’s mother even moved in with her to make sure she gets back to good health. Avril says that she’s 80 percent better, but she admits that it has been a difficult recovery process.
“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
Lavigne mostly kept her health scare to herself, but did vaguely mention to her fans about it on Twitter. Unfortunately, her issues were revealed through a fan account on Twitter. The Twitter account named “Avril Lavigne Charts” revealed a screenshot of a direct message conversation between a fan and Lavigne, in which the singer reveals she hasn’t been feeling well. She also asked fans for their prayers during her difficult time, according to Us Weekly.
The fan wrote: “Hey Av! It’s been like two years since you completed your last album. Are you in the studio right now or working for something?… We were worried about you.”
Avril wrote: “I feel bad because I haven’t been able to say anything to the fans to let them [know] why I’ve been absent,” the “Complicated” singer wrote. “I’m not feeling well. I’m having some health issues. So please keep me in your prayers.”
Fans wrote that they missed her, and even had the hashtags #GetWellSoonAvril and #PrayForAvril trending on Twitter.
Lavigne responded: “Thank you….I miss you guys too.”
The singer took to Twitter to thank her fans again for their prayers and get well wishes. Avril’s health scare in December made rumors swirl that she was heading to rehab and divorcing husband Chad Kroeger. She is now set on making new music again. Avril’s single, “Fly,” is expected to release this month for the 2015 Special Olympics.
Avril Lavigne is not letting Lyme disease get her down though. She responded, “This was a wake-up call. I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.”
