Man Tried To Drown Himself After Meeting ‘Ugly’ Bride For Arranged Marriage

When it comes to the concept of an arranged marriage, most people in the West are horrified by the prospect of such a union, although that’s not the case in many Muslim cultures as well as in certain parts of China.

As the following story highlights, arranged marriages are problematic, even if, in this case, the groom’s reaction was a little overstated. Perhaps it is surprising that this type of reaction doesn’t happen more often considering the implications of a couple, who have never even met before, undertaking to spend the rest of their lives together.

When 33-year-old Kang Hu met his bride at the proverbial altar in the city of Shinyan in central China, he couldn’t hide his dislike for her physical appearance and concluded that she was too “ugly” for him to marry. He walked out of the wedding ceremony and tried to kill himself in a nearby river after saying that Na Sung would be “bad for his image.”

Hu’s best man at the arranged marriage gone wrong, Chan Wang, told reporters,

“It was a very awkward moment for everyone. The bride was devastated, her family were furious, his family were furious, and we his friends were embarrassed. Kang has very exact tastes and had been forced into this marriage.”

Just a short time after his dramatic walk out, the groom was seen wandering aimlessly next to a river bank, before hurling himself into the water in a half-baked attempt to commit suicide.

Soon after he threw himself in, onlookers called the police who came and rescued Hu from death. As Qan Tsui who took photos of the rescue talked about Hu’s condition.

“He was fully clothed and floating face down in the water. He was unconscious and I thought he was dead. When the police arrived one jumped in and dragged him ashore with the help of foremen who put a rope around his chest to pull him out before pumping his chest. They saved his life.”

Following his recovery in hospital, Hu told reporters, “I feel bad about what happened but when I saw her she wasn’t what I had expected and I realised she would be bad for my image. My parents had arranged this and I couldn’t see any way out apart from suicide.”
