Valve’s Gabe Newell is probably getting tired about being asked about Half Life 3 release date rumors. After all, it seems like every year there a new crop of rumors claiming Valve is secretly toiling away on the project. Perhaps Valve feels like teasing fans about Half Life 3 since the upcoming GDC 2015 certainly has a whole lot of three’s involved.
In a related report by the Inquisitr, some developers claim Left 4 Dead 3 is also secretly in development.
This time around, there are actually two reasons that people believe Valve could soon announce the Half Life 3 release date. According to Motoring Crunch, a recent Steam update came with a mysterious “App 323900” that has everyone talking since we clearly saw a Half Life 3 logo. Valve responded by immediately yanking the App 323900, but the damage had already been done.
The leaked Half Life 3 logo was big enough news that Gabe Newell officially responded to the rumors. While he started off by admitting there is a lot of anticipation for the Half Life sequel, he broke the gaming community’s hearts by claiming the game is not in production and that the Half Life 3 release date is not any time soon. Of course, everyone hopes he’s lying.
The second Half Life 3 rumor is based upon the upcoming Game Developers Conference set for March 3, 2015. Valve has officially announced plans to host a “Physics For Programmers: Physics Optimization Strategies” panel, but the trick to the rumor is that they happened to schedule this time for the third day of the third month at 3 p.m. It could be argued it’s simply a coincidence, but that’s a whole lot of three’s involved. Some fans could also reasonably argue that Half Life gameplay is largely based upon physics. Of course, there’s also another popular physics-based game that has a three as part of the title: Portal 3.
Even though Valve officially denied the Half Life 3 rumors, it must also be pointed out that Counter-Strike co-creator Minh Le once claimed to have potentially seen early development concept art.
“There’s like a laser sight on my head right now. I don’t know if I can talk about that, to be honest. I think it’s kind of public knowledge that people know that it is being worked on. So if I were to say I’ve seen some images, like some concept art of it, that wouldn’t be big news. But I guess I could say that I did see something that looked like kind of like in the Half-Life universe. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if I said ‘Yeah, they’re working on it.’ So I mean, to go out on a limb, I would say yeah, I did see some concept art for Half-Life 3. Somebody’s knocking on my door right now [laughs]. It seems like old news. I think everyone kind of knows that it’s being worked on.”
