Actor Jermaine Huggins was arrested for buying 200 pounds of marijuana from undercover cops. The former child star from the 1989 hit film Lean On Me, and later in the movie Juice, was charged with two felony counts, but there’s a bit of a catch. Huggins’ arrest has started trending on all forms of social media, but he was arrested in 2011.
The Daily Mail ran an article on February 28, 2015 that Jermaine “Huggy” Hopkins was “arrested recently” in Avondale, Arizona. He was allegedly trying to buy 200 pounds of weed from an undercover officer, and he got busted for it.
That sure is breaking news, but it was breaking news for 2011.
A little research shows that TMZ was one of the first to report that Jermaine Hopkins was arrested on the two felony counts of possessing, transporting, and attempting to sell the marijuana. The only thing is that it was first reported on December 15, 2011.
For some reason, the article from the Daily Mail is dated as recent and now Jermaine Hopkins is trending again.
Hopkins, 38 at the time, lived in North Carolina and traveled to Arizona for the drug deal. Cops had set up a sting operation. Hopkins got control of the weed from the undercover cop and left, but he was shortly pulled over and arrested.
Approximately $100,000 was found in his car and police seized an additional 100 pounds of marijuana at his Arizona apartment later. Hopkins stated he got involved in the drug deal so that he could give his family a nice Christmas.
Many remember Hopkins for his roles in such big films as Lean On Me and Juice, but he also starred in Strapped, an HBO worldwide release. Perhaps his most famous moment was when Morgan Freeman’s character in Lean On Me simply asked the troubled youth, “You smoke crack, don’tcha boy?”
Social media has been blowing up with people remembering Hopkins and his time in those different roles. They also can’t believe that he tried to buy so much marijuana off police at one time.
Either way, the original bust was back in 2011, and now Jermaine “Huggy” Hopkins has his name back in the news and in the spotlight. Sure, it may not be the best way for the actor to get his name back out there, but people are taking notice of him yet again.
