Mary Poppins Death Metal Mashup And Other Stories By Andy Rehfeldt [Video]

Mary Poppins was a magical matronly nanny in the 1964 Disney movie Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews played the lead in the movie, which saw Mary Poppins become nanny to a dysfunctional family in London who employs her unique brand of lifestyle to improve the family’s dynamic. The movie is sweet and wholesome and filled with the sort of jolly song you would expect from Mary Poppins in a mid-1960’s Disney movie.

Fast forward to 2015 and cue Andy Rehfeldt. You may not be familiar with Rehfeldt’s name, but if you are a regular user of YouTube, chances are that you have seen some of his hilarious musical mash-ups. Metal Insider reports that for the past couple of years, Rehfeldt, a musician and composer, has been overdubbing famous videos with death metal versions of the songs.

You guessed it — Mary Poppins is the latest to receive Rehfeldt’s treatment. Andy isolated the vocal track and then substitutes it with a death metal version. As this video of Mary Poppins shows, the results are hilarious. Once you check out the video, you will never see Mary Poppins or Julie Andrews in quite the same light again.

As Mary Poppins seemingly belts out “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” one of the most famous songs from the movie, Digital Spy reports that Rehfeldt’s overdubbed version has had over half a million views since it was released Tuesday February 24. RTE reports that the vocals to the Mary Poppins track are provided by Sera Hatchett and Thomas Hinds, with mixing by Grant Cornish.

Mary Poppins is far from the first to receive the Rehfeldt treatment. Andy has even run the gag in reverse, for example, in this smooth Jazz cover of metal monsters Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”

Another classic Rehfeldt mash-up is a death metal version of the Bee Gee’s classic “How Deep Is Your Love.”

Andy told Metal Insider that he was inspired to create his mash-ups when he was working on the Lamb of God CD Wrath, which had the vocal tracks separated. He thought to himself “I can do my own music to the vocals.” Andy wanted to come up with something funny, and his video’s are the result. Andy had no plans to go viral with his videos, as he just wanted to make people laugh. He admits that it has been really exciting for him to see the videos on his YouTube channel take off and go viral in the way they have.

Andy is far from finished with his mash-ups and has a Radio Disney version of Behemoth’s “Demigod” and a death metal version of Abba’s “Dancing Queen” in the pipeline. What would Mary Poppins have made of it all?
