New ‘Pee-Wee’ Movie Will Be Netflix Exclusive

A new Pee-Wee movie is on its way, but not to theaters. Pee-Wee Herman actor, Paul Reubens, said in a statement that he and producer Judd Apatow have been talking about it for four years. Now, thanks to video streaming services, it will be a reality.

It’s understandable why Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday won’t be hitting theaters. Decades ago, Paul Reubens got himself in trouble with the law and his fans when he was caught “playing with his pee-wee” in an adult theater. Parents were outraged that their children’s hero was such a pervert, and that was the last of “Pee-Wee’s” big adventures on the big screen.

Paul Reubens has been on the silver screen since then, though his arguably most memorable role was as the super flatulent Spleen in 1999’s comic book adaptation, Mystery Men. With time, the outrage has faded over the actor’s indecent shenanigans, and he’s coming back in a feature-length film in the role that made him famous.

Reubens’ statement revealed how long he’s been waiting to move forward with a new Pee-Wee movie.

“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then — Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bow tie is the new black.”

Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday director, John Lee, has been behind such TV successes as Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer. He is ready to make his feature length film debut.

Netflix head, Ted Sarandos, has expressed his delight for the movie’s release.

“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that [‘Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday’] was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation.”
