Sean Penn Says Marriage To Charlize Theron Will Be His ‘First’ Despite Being Married Twice Before

It looks like Sean Penn is taking the saying “out of sight, out of mind” very seriously for his relationship with Charlize Theron. Penn hasn’t commented directly about their reported engagement until now, and what he’s saying is a bit of a head scratcher.

In a sit down with Esquire UK, the March 2015 cover guy says that Charlize will be his “first” marriage, even though he was married twice, once to Madonna, and his second to Robin Wright.

“You say I’ve been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today. So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, ‘Without tradition, new things die.’ And I don’t want new things to die.”

So does this mean Sean Penn is basically saying that he was too immature for marriage the first two times around? It looks like it. Either way, it sounds like Penn is very committed to Charlize Theron. According to a source, “There’s no ring, but they are committed.” Actions also speak louder than words in their relationship.

As the Inquisitr reported, Penn has filed papers to adopt Theron’s son Jackson. At the time, a source old Radar, “It has been a very natural process of them becoming a true family. Jackson calls Sean, ‘Daddy,’ and Sean just lights up around him. Sean picks Jackson up from nursery school, and all of the parents know him.”

Not only is Penn looking to become Jackson’s father legally, but he’s also hoping to expand the family. “There is still talk of adopting again and giving Jackson a brother or a sister.”

Even though he’s very happy with his life now, it doesn’t mean the actor doesn’t have regrets.

“I was one of those fathers, when I was out of town, I was on that Friday red-eye, back on Monday,” Penn explained. “My ex-wife [Robin] and I worked hard to not work at the same time. I was very present. All of that stuff. But still: there’s a lot of time I want back, time I wish I’d spent with my kids. And by the way, we talk about the mistake all the time as it relates to the kids, but it’s a mistake for you. Fathers and increasingly mothers, too. And you can’t get it back.”
