Malaki Paul was a 9-year-old Britain’s Got Talent contestant, who suffered from stage fright.
One night in November, 2012, during his audition, he learned there is a lot of truth in the adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.”
Malaki admitted that he did have problems performing in front of an audience, but if he could just look at his mom, then he knew everything would be okay.
Luckily, Mom was backstage when he stood up to perform in front of Simon Cowell and company.
The Malaki Paul audition starts well enough as the young man shows he has some serious vocal talent. But somewhere in the process, nerves got to him and he broke down in tears, almost taking the entire judging panel with him.
But Mom was there and she ran out to the stage to give the little guy a shoulder to cry on. After that, well, let’s just say he comes through like a champ.
Simon Cowell shared his admiration for the young man immediately following the performance.
“What I like about you, is you’re brave,” Cowell said. “You got off to a bad start, had to build yourself up. People are going to like you a lot.”
But enough talk. Here’s the entire seven-and-a-half minute ordeal. It’s pretty moving stuff.
Malaki Paul will be 12-years-old this year, and if you want to see more of his performing, your guess is as good as ours. He doesn’t seem to have maintained a web presence beyond the various YouTube videos, most of which are two years old or more. His Facebook and Twitter feeds are not updated very often either with his Facebook feed not seeing a post since 2012.
(We’re assuming that was a fan page maintained by an adult since having an actual Facebook is against TOS for anyone under 13.)
He made it to the semi-finals for Britain’s Got Talent Series 6, but did not end up advancing to the last round.
Still, his voice continues to inspire and move the world, and I’d love to see how he matures over time.
