‘Minecraft’ Is Now The Most-Played Title On Xbox Live, Over 1.75 Billion Hours Spent Playing On Xbox 360

Mojang’s popular sandbox creation game was already popular, when the 4J Studios’ console port of Minecraft first launched on the Xbox 360 in 2012. In the time since the original launch of the Xbox edition, Minecraft has continued to grow into a worldwide phenomenon. The title has dominated gaming to the extent that Minecraft was listed in the 2015 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for becoming the “Most-Played Xbox Live Game,” according to a report from IGN.

This year’s newly-released world records revealed that Xbox 360 owners spent have spent 1.75 billion hours within the Minecraft‘s block-filled worlds. For purposes of submitting the information to Guinness in time to be recorded in the official 2015 world records, that figure was taken in May of 2014, using only statistics gathered from the Xbox 360 version of the Minecraft while connected to Xbox Live. That means Minecraft users have had an additional eight months to accrue more playtime since that number was recorded.

It will be interesting to see what next year’s total playtime will be for Minecraft’s across Xbox Live. While the time spent playing Minecraft on Microsoft consoles will have naturally increased in that time, 4J Studios has also released a new version of the game on Xbox One after last year’s record-breaking statistics was recorded. With Minecraft now offered on two different Xbox platforms, the number of fans playing the game over Xbox Live will obviously grow.

Several other record-breaking facts about Minecraft were also listed in the 2015 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. The more notable entries included a marathon play session of Minecraft clocked in at just over 24 hours long and a record of 2,622 users concurrently playing on the same Minecraft PC server.

Minecraft was listed as the Guinness record hold for “Best-Selling Indie Game” for selling over 16 million copies of the PC version of the game. However, that number has since grown after Mojang recently revealed that Minecraft’s PC edition has now sold more than 18 million copies, as reported by the Inquisitr.

Those who play the game on either Microsoft platform will have more reasons to get on Minecraft next month, after the Simpsons avatar skin DLC was announced to release in February. While the add-on has only been confirmed to be available on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 of Minecraft at this time, developer 4J Studios tweeted that news regarding the licensed Minecraft DLC coming to other systems is on the way.

“Stay tuned for more information on THE SIMPSONS downloadable content pack on other platforms.”

In addition to the title’s original PC edition, Minecraft is now available on a variety of console platforms and mobile devices. With the franchise’s popularity showing no signs of slowing down, Minecraft will likely continue to set more world records in the future.
