Super Bowl Breaks Advertising Record: Companies Pay $3.5 Million For 30-Second Spots

Are You Ready for Commercials!!! NBC has already sold every bit of ad space for this year’s Super Bowl XLVI, and they sold the 30-seconds spot for a pretty penny. Each 30-second spot sold for $3.5 million.

That’s $116,666,667 per second.

During the Green Bay Packers / Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl game last year companies like GoDaddy, Volkswagen, and Budweiser paid $3 million. Super Bowl commercials have seen a 59% increase over the last ten years. In 2003, a 30-second spot was selling for $2.1 million.

USA Today reports that all of the 30-second slots were sold out by Thanksgiving. Seth Winter, senior vice president of sales and marketing at NBC’s sports group, said:

“We have shattered any recent revenue stories in regards to the Super Bowl.”

Winter also said that several companies purchased two back-to-back 30-second slots. In 2011, Volkswagen purchased a 60-second slot to run this famous commercial.

According to USA Today, Troy Aikman and Deion Sanders will be appearing in Bridgestone’s Super Bowl ad this year, GoDaddy.com will use the Pussycat Dolls, and Dannon will become the first yogurt company to ever advertise during the Super Bowl.

Car commercials will also be well represented. GM has five slots that it will use to promote Chevy and Cadillac. Toyota, Hyundai and Kia will also run ads during the Super Bowl.

The NFL playoffs begin this Saturday. Super Bowl XLVI will air on February 5th on NBC.
