Fans can watch the Oregon vs. Ohio State game live online and see which team emerges as the first true champion in major college football history.
The teams square off Monday night in Dallas for the first College Football Playoff national championship game, pitting the No. 2 seeded Ducks against the No. 4 Buckeyes. The winner will be the first national champion decided without meddling from pollsters or the BCS.
“It’s college football history,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Sunday.
The game kicks off at 8:3o p.m. from Dallas. ESPN will be handling the television coverage and also making the broadcast available through its online win, WatchESPN.com.
Both teams seemed unlikely to be meeting with the national championship on the line. Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech at home in September, but since then won 12 straight. Oregon also suffered a difficult early loss, falling to Arizona in October, but since then has won nine games, all by double digits margins.
It’s also likely that without the new College Football Playoff — which pitted the top four teams in the country in a two-round playoff — neither Ohio State nor Oregon would have had a chance to play for the national championship.
“We’ve been playing, both our program and Ohio State have played with that kind of early loss, and your back was against the wall to get to this point every play of every game, the entire rest of the season, it was to the those words: do or die,” said Oregon coach Mark Helfrich.
Fans who watch the Oregon vs. Ohio State game live online will see whether the Buckeyes can get to the almost mistake-free Marcus Mariota. The Heisman Trophy winner has thrown only 13 interceptions in his 1,130 career pass attempts, including only three multi-interception games during his career.
“Marcus has an unbelievable mind,” Ducks offensive coordinator Scott Frost said. “I think that’s his best attribute. Despite being able to do everything he can do physically, he can process things so fast. Sometimes he makes me feel inadequate because of how fast he can process through things.”
The Buckeyes know they will need to keep Mariota in check and likely force him into making some mistakes, but say they’re not afraid to face him.
“I wouldn’t say we’re scared of anybody really,” Buckeyes defensive end Joey Bosa said. “We just gotta pay attention to where he is at all times and what he’s doing at all times.”
