WipEout 2048 devs discuss canned ‘ZOMBIE’ mode

In a post over on the PlayStation Blog, WipEout 2048 lead designer Karl Jones and game director Stuart Tilley detailed a canned mode for the PlayStation Vita racer that sounds at once bizarre and totally awesome.

Dubbed “ZOMBIE”, the mode had players desperately attempting to flee groups of, what else, zombies. Granted, they weren’t zombies in the traditional sense – obviously the traditional shambling, brain-eating zombie would have a hard time catching up with the racers in WipEout.

Instead, players were hunted down by zombie ships. Players started off their race for their life alone and in darkness and, as the track progressed further, more and more of the high-speed “zombie” ships would barrel towards you, ramming you at every opportunity in an attempt to destroy you by any means necessary – even by blowing themselves up.

“Our prototypes showed that it was a lot of fun to flee from a horde of terrifying Zombie ships, but ZOMBIE was just one of a number of cool modes in prototype,” Tilley explained. “In the final reckoning, we made the call to put Zombie mode on the back burner. That said, like a real-life Zombie, ZOMBIE mode is dead, but it’s not completely dead.”

In other words, you can probably expect to see the mode as DLC for WipEout 2048 at some point.
