Jimmer Fredette NBA Debut: Former BYU Scoring Machine Quiet in First Game for Kings

Sacramento Kings rookie Jimmer Fredette kicked off his NBA career by scoring six points during his team’s 100-91 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Fredette, a 6-foot-2 guard who won the NCAA’s college player of the year award as a senior for BYU last season, shot 3-for-8, and also had three assists, a rebound and three turnovers in his quiet debut as a King.

While the small offensive output was understandable for the NBA rookie in his 24 minutes of play, the fact that Jimmer – famous for his legendary range, which commentators often joke starts from where he enters the gym – ended the game without taking a single three-point field goal was the biggest surprise. He later said he was making an effort to be more aggressive with the ball.

“It felt like they were running at me at the three-point line,” Fredette told reporters in a post game interview. “I was pump-faking them, getting one of those one-dribble jumpers, made a couple of them, missed a couple of them. Probably could’ve shot a couple threes, but I decided to pump-fake, take a dribble, shoot it that way.”

He added about his first game as a Sacramento King: “It was just going out there, trying to be aggressive, looking for my opportunities, whatever it is that I have for a chance. It was just a great team effort tonight, great win.”
