While Arrow fans may still be recovering from that epic mid-season finale – what other show would end a fall finale like that by having a main character stabbed with a sword and then kicked off a cliff? – there is some good news about what’s coming in two upcoming episodes as two characters (one dead, one last seen locked up in the A.R.G.U.S. prison on the island) will be returning in back-to-back episodes.
Arrow season 3 began with Sara returning to Starling City and teaming up with Oliver briefly before she was killed and fell off a roof right in front of her sister. As the mid-season finale revealed, Thea was the one who killed her, but only because Malcolm drugged her. Oliver then told the League that he killed Sara because she asked him to in order to protect his sister, leading to the duel that ended with Ra’s al Ghul kicking him off the mountain as previously reported by the Inquisitr. Watch the promo for the show’s January return below to see Oliver declared “dead” and someone approaching his body.
Caity Lotz returns as Sara and Peter Stormare returns as Vertigo in Arrow season 3 episode 13, “Canaries,” and according to TVLine, having both those characters in the same episode “is a purposeful season-premiere callback.” Showrunner Marc Guggenheim has said that this is their way of bringing things “full circle.”
“It’s an episode where a lot of things that we’ve been doing and setting up during the season really sort of come together. It’s not a ‘climactic’ kind of episode, but there’s a feeling of a big payoff by the end of it.”
Meanwhile, Slade hasn’t been seen since Oliver locked him up in the A.R.G.U.S. prison on the island, though he was mentioned in the crossover with The Flash; Harkness also earned himself a spot in that prison. However, he is back in Arrow season 3 episode 14, titled “The Return,” and Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly that Slade’s return is “epic” and will answer some questions people have about what’s going on with him.
“Everyone’s been asking: How does he feed himself? You’re going to get an answer to that question. He loomed so large in season 2 that his return in episode 14 really makes it feel incredibly epic. You’ll see why it’s very appropriate for us to revisit Slade Wilson in episode 14 when you see the end of episode 13.”
Unfortunately, in some news that is sure to disappoint some fans, TVLine also reports that there’s no word on Deadshot returning this season right now.
Arrow season 3 returns Wednesday, January 21 at 8 p.m. on the CW.
