‘The Walking Dead’ California? Rumors Flying About Spinoff Series

Just because the original Walking Dead is on a mid-season hiatus doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of news about everyone’s favorite zombie apocalypse series. It was announced quite a while ago that The Walking Dead was going to be getting a spinoff series, but news about that spinoff has started to come fast and furious over the last few days and weeks.

Some of the information about The Walking Dead spinoff has been confirmed, such as a couple of cast members officially announced at the beginning of this month. One big rumor which, at this point is just a seemingly credible rumor, is that The Walking Dead spinoff is being called Cobalt and will begin filming in California in the very near future.

The California rumors started circulating after a Redditor named KiddMicks posted a letter he says he received recently. In the letter, Ted Kim, billed as the key assistant location manager is telling a resident that he is scouting locations for a show named Cobalt. It was previously discussed that Cobalt was indeed the working title of the newest Walking Dead series, though it doesn’t appear that AMC has officially confirmed that title.

According to Nerd Reactor, the offshoot was never supposed to be set in Georgia, but rather to have an entirely new location in order to tell the story from a different direction. Some rumors had this new version of The Walking Dead taking place in Pennsylvania. Of course, it’s possible the filming could start off in California and move somewhere else as The Walking Dead spinoff rolls along.

The letter doesn’t necessarily mean that Cobalt will be set in California either. There are a number of rather famous shows that were shot in Hollywood but were set in other parts of the country. The most famous of these was Seinfeld, which was set in New York City but was entirely filmed in Tinsel Town. This could all be a rather elaborate ruse as well, considering the letter isn’t exactly on official letterhead.

Some have pointed out that Ted Kim is indeed a part of the team that would be out scouting locations for The Walking Dead but his email and cell phone number were (rightfully even and especially if its real) blurred out. The lack of official AMC letterhead could also be an attempt to keep the true nature of Cobalt under wraps just a little bit longer. If this is legit, it appears a big piece of information about The Walking Dead‘s spinoff is out of the bag.
