11-year-old $1,300 Cab Ride: Girl Runs Away From Home To Meet A Boy

An 11-year-old Arkansas girl took a $1,300 cab ride earlier this month, and her shocking story is now making headlines. Alexis Waller ran away from home on December 5. According to People Magazine, the 11-year-old was staying with her grandmother at the time, and she left her home in the middle of the night. She did not leave empty handed either. She took $10,000 in cash from her grandmother’s sock drawer when she left. The cash was to pay her way to Florida.

The next morning her grandmother went to her room to wake her up for school, and she found her bed empty. It was revealed that Waller left her home around 3 am, and she walked to a nearby gas station. From there, the young girl hitchhiked to Little Rock, Arkansas. Once she arrived in that city, she called a cab, and she told the cab driver when he arrived that she wanted to go to Jacksonville, Florida.

The driver did not say no to her request, but he informed her that the cab ride would cost $2,500. She did not blink an eye at the amount. She agreed to pay $1,300 to the driver up front, and she would give him the remaining payment when the cab arrived in Jacksonville.

The 11-year-old never made it that far. Her grandmother discovered her empty bed and a note around 9 am that morning. The note said that the girl was running away to Montana. By 10 am, her parents had already called in the Bryant police department. The police accessed her cell phone records, and those records showed the call to the cab company. After police contacted the cab company, they learned that Alexis had already made it as far as Atlanta, Georgia.

Her parents hopped into their car to retrieve the runaway teen. Her father, Brent Waller, revealed in an interview with local media that they feared “the worst.” After the family was reunited, their first thought was of hugging the runaway teen. Punishment was not on their minds at that moment.

Why did the teen run away from home? She was headed to Florida to meet up with a boy she had met while the family was on vacation two years ago. The 11-year-old girl had remained in contact with the boy since their meeting, and she wanted to see him again.

Many are wondering why the cab driver accepted the fare. It was the middle of the night, and she is a very young girl. The police are not planning to charge the cab driver though. According to Kelowna News, a representative from the Bryant Police did speak up about the cab driver’s actions.

“It is unclear why a cab company would agree to take such a young child across state lines with no parental guidance, not to mention it being in the middle of the night. One thing is for certain, the quick response of the parents [and] the Bryant Police Officers that worked flawlessly as a team saved this scared young girl from unknown dangers that were lying ahead. She is now back in the safe arms of her family.”

The 11-year-old girl in this case is very lucky. She hitchhiked with a stranger in the middle of the night. Another 11-year-old girl was not so lucky. The Inquisitr reported recently that her grandfather killed an 11-year-old girl and her mother. A motive for the killing was not revealed, but the little girl spoke about her grandfather’s behavior in her online blog. Her father found posts detailing events leading up to her death, and the little girl revealed that her grandfather had threatened to kill her.

In the case of Alexis Waller, she is at home safe with her family in Arkansas. However, her story could have ended very differently. What do you think of this 11-year-old’s $1,300 cab ride? Should the cab driver have accepted the fare?
