‘Once Upon A Time’: With ‘Frozen’ Storyline Finished, What Comes Next?

The Once Upon a Time midseason finale airs this Sunday, December 14. And as the Inquisitr previously reported, instead of continuing the Frozen storyline into next year, the creators have decided to end it before the series goes on break. But when the show returns in March of 2015, there will be three new villains with it.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Once Upon a Time executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis revealed that the Queens of Darkness will appear in the midseason finale and then be the latest storyline for the series. The Queens of Darkness are Maleficent, Ursula, and Cruella de Vil. Kitsis went into detail as to how the second half of Once Upon a Time Season 4 will play out.

“For this one, we saw in the first half of the season that Regina was really questioning whether or not villains could get happy endings.”

Horowitz added that not every happy ending has to be in the traditional sense.

“Happy ending doesn’t necessarily equal redemption, because happy endings are in the eye of the beholder.”

Kitsis gave an example of how some people might view them differently than others.

“For instance, if watching two beloved heroes die makes you happy, well then your happy ending is probably different than the two heroes who want to see the villain die.”

When it comes to the Queens of Darkness, Maleficent has made appearances in past episodes of Once Upon a Time, as well as the now-cancelled Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. But the other two characters are new to the series, Kitsis said.

“We always wanted to bring Maleficent back. We thought, ‘What is the greatest team of evil we could gather to go up against?’ Ursula we teased in the Ariel episode last year, and then Cruella, for a while, we just always wanted to bring her on the show and couldn’t figure out how because in the movie, she was kind of [1950s]. You always want to put your twist on it. For us, Cruella just fit into this trio of terror.”

One of the things he also teased is that Once Upon a Time will show how these three villains came to be.

“We’ve always said evil is not born, it’s made. One of the things we’re so excited about with these three villains is showing their origin stories. We’ve never seen the origin stories with Maleficent, Ursula, or Cruella, so we’re excited about that.”

Horowitz explained that bringing a character like Cruella de Vil into Once Upon a Time is going to require some changes.

“She’s a fun character for us. We hopefully found a way to spin it and make her different and part of the Once universe while also having plenty of nods of the iconography of Cruella that everybody loves.”

Kitsis added that her origins story in Once Upon a Time will be different than that of the original 101 Dalmatians character.

“We’re going to realize that our Cruella may have originated from the Enchanted Forest, and we may find out she has some magic of her own. She’s part villain, part Zelda Fitzgerald. There’s something glamorous and Jazz Age, but something very deadly about her as well.”

And while Once Upon a Time‘s current season will soon be going on hiatus, previous seasons have been a hit on Netflix. According to Poltrack, via the A.V. Club, it’s the most-streamed program along with The Blacklist. Both shows make up for 7 percent of total viewership, and are watched by more people than any of Netflix’s original programming.
