Parenting Tips On Diapers? New Proposals In The U.K. Are Being Discussed

How would you react if parenting tips were printed on diapers?

While changing your baby’s diaper, you would be able to read printed messages, tips and advice.

Even though that seems like something out of a book of far-fetched dreams, it might actually become a reality a lot sooner than you think.

The Behavioural Insights Team wants to helpful messages and parenting tips printed on diapers, also referred to as nappies.

Also referred to as the “nudge unit,” the Behavioural Insights Team is currently considering the idea of having printed messages that remind parents to do such things as talk to their babies often.

Discussions were held at the World Economic Forum located in Dubai recently about the proposal.

Daily Mail reports that Dr. David Halpern, the chief executive officer of the Behavioural Insights Team, was in attendance at that meeting.

Shortly after the meeting came to an end, the Forum published a detailed article that explained the overall concept of the printed prompts and parenting tips on diapers a little further.

“Add a note on the front of the nappy encouraging parents to ‘look up’ and ‘talk to your baby’ or to narrate what they are doing as they change the nappy. Small prompts like these may be just enough to remind parents that every second, a baby’s brain develops 700 new neural connections and that this is a good time to help make those connections stronger.”

It has been proven through recent studies that parents who regularly talk to their babies are actually teaching them how to speak and communicate more quickly than parents who do not.

In addition, further studies show that a child’s lingual development can be expedited just by having their mother enthusiastically respond to their babbling.

Even though quite a few parenting experts and doctors favor the idea of printing parenting tips on diapers, there are others that do not feel the same way. For instance, Dr. Ellie Lee of the Centre for Parenting and Culture Studies located at the University of Kent is not a big fan of the idea at all.

“You’ve got plenty to think about when you’re changing a nappy. The idea of turning into an educational experience is insane.”

What do you think? Would you like to see parenting tips and advice printed on diapers? Or, do you think that there is a much more effective way to relay helpful parenting tips to parents in need?
