Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Coming To DVD, Blu-Ray December 9

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, 2014’s most surprising blockbuster smash, finally comes to DVD/Blu-Ray December 9 after raking in $770 million worldwide. The film is certain to be a holiday gift favorite.

Guardians, a film comprised of what was thought to be B-level Marvel characters, hauled in $330 million domestically behind cult darling director James Gunn’s breakout effort, and scored huge with viewers young and old. The movie spawned an animated series, a top selling soundtrack in Awesome Mix: Vol. 1, several lines of toys and collectibles, new comic properties, and even parody off shoots such as “Friends of the Galaxy,” the recent viral mash up of the successful summer smash and the intro to the 90’s sitcom juggernaut Friends.

Den of Geek reports that the Blu-ray set will feature plenty of features to keep fanboys and fangirls happy, with several deleted scenes, an alternate audio commentary, and an exclusive extended preview of the highly-anticipated Marvel sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As if anticipation of the film’s release wasn’t already high enough, Marvel has cleverly kept Guardians in the public consciousness and its fans’ appetite whet with the recent free offering of Awesome Mix: Vol. 1 via Google Play, as well as the release of Awesome Mix: Vol. 0, a collection of songs curated by Gunn during the filming of the Boot of Jemiah scenes to “keep the extras hyped and alive and feeling like they were in a bar atmosphere,” according to Gigwise.

In addition, rumors have been swirling concerning the possible exclusive gift packaging for the release of Guardians for retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart that could include an Infinity Crystal, an element essential to the conceit of the film, or even a miniature baby Groot figurine. Fans of the film have hoped for a potential limited holiday theatrical re-release, but with Thanksgiving only a week away, officially kicking off the holiday shopping season, it appears highly unlikely since an announcement has not been made by now.

Marvel has already announced the greenlighting of two Guardians of the Galaxy sequels, expected to be ready for release in 2016 and 2018, respectively, as well as some cross involvement in the third installment of The Avengers film trilogy. Both Guardians sequels are set to be co-written and directed by Gunn, with all key cast members signed to return.
