Nicki Minaj Will Quit Music To Be A Mother

Even the most hardcore women in rap music seem to eventually drop the mic for the (baby) bottle — something that’s been seen from female rappers like Lil’ Kim and M.I.A., who continued to drop rhymes while they carried children. According to a new interview with Complex magazine, Nicki Minaj might be taking a page from Lil’ Kim when it comes to her decision to settle down and have a baby. Nicki said she will take a break from music when the time comes for her to be a mother, as opposed to, say, M.I.A. who infamously performed at the 2009 Grammy Awards on her due date.

It’s hard to imagine the pop-rap world without Minaj at this point. The last time she disappeared between albums, Iggy Azalea sprouted back up in her place — an event that is rumored to have not left Nicki too happy. But Minaj might just throw all of that away for the chance to be a mother, according to a recent interview with Complex magazine.

“I always said, ‘When I have my baby, it’s going to be all about my baby. I don’t want the child feeling like they don’t have all of my attention, so I always said, ‘I’m going to take a little break.'”

From the rest of the interview, Nicki made it sound like she was speaking from experience. Since she first shot to mainstream prominence with “Super Bass” in 2011, Minaj hasn’t had a whole lot of downtime — something that Nicki fears could bleed over into her role as a mother, she told Complex.

‘When you’re working and you’re busy and you’re successful, no matter what, something suffers, whether it’s your relationship with your mother, your relationship with your whole family, not being able to go to your brother’s graduation… Certain things suffer and take the back burner.”

But it wouldn’t be the first time that Minaj has had to make a choice between herself and her career. Nicki’s super sexual video for “Anaconda” was arguably one of the biggest drivers of the single’s success, but that, too, was something that Minaj had been waiting on as well — in order to solidify her reputation as a rapper first.

‘The reason why I stopped taking pictures like that was because I needed to prove myself. I needed for people to take me seriously… I needed for people to respect my craft. I’ve proven that I’m an MC. I’m a writer; I’m the real deal, so if I want to take sexy pictures, I can.'”

Do you think Nicki Minaj would be making the right decision to leave behind her career at this point?
