Bill Cosby’s Lawyer Speaks About Cosby’s Awkward NPR Moment And Rape Accusations As NBC And Netflix Remain Silent

Bill Cosby had quite the awkward moment recently when the comedian refused to directly address the rape accusations being levied against him during an NPR interview, as reported by the Inquisitr. On November 16, Cosby’s lawyer spoke out as his mouthpiece in the wake of Cosby only shaking his head during the NPR interview, which sent the moment of awkward silence into internet viral land.

John P. Schmitt told the Associated Press that repeating the rape charges “does not make them true” and issued the standard awkward line about not dignifying “decade-old, discredited” accusations with a response – but time will tell if those words are enough to make this come-to-Jesus moment disappear for Cosby.

“He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work.”

Schmitt’s mention of Cosby’s fans could be wishful references to the upcoming standup shows the comedian has scheduled – with one slated for Sunday evening in Erie, Pennsylvania. However, with one awkward moment following the next awkward moment for each interview Cosby tries to undergo, it seems as if awkward platitudes won’t make this controversy go away easily.

Specifically in light of Barbara Bowman’s viral account in the Washington Post, wherein she charged that as a 17-year-old, her trust was won and abused by Cosby, who has a November 28 special Netflix project planned. Discussions about that project with the Associated Press were postponed indefinitely, and NBC declined to comment on the family sitcom talks starring Cosby as the patriarch, which would’ve made for a more than awkward moment for the network. NBC has not announced an air date for that Cosby vehicle.

Adding that moment of awkward silence, Netflix did not immediately reply to the Associated Press’ request for a comment on the Cosby special – and Cosby’s planned moment to speak on the Late Show with David Letterman was canceled, as reported on November 14 by the Hollywood Reporter.

Prior to those cancellations and the NPR moment of awkward silence, Cosby canceled his appearance on The Queen Latifah Show, which was scheduled for October 30.

With the serious rape charges still not being directly addressed by Cosby – whose routines focus on wholesome family values – one wonders how long audiences will stand beside “America’s dad” without him addressing this moment of darkness overshadowing his career.
