‘Halo: Nightfall’ Video Full Of Surprises

343 Industries released a “first look” video Monday for the upcoming Halo: Nightfall live-action series that will be included as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection for the Xbox One. This is the first real chance at seeing the Ridley Scott produced series in action, and it provides excellent teaser material.

Halo: Nightfall serves as an origin story for Oni Agent Jameson Locke. He has a significant role in and will be a playable character in Halo 5: Guardians. There was some confusion about him being the primary character in the game, but Master Chief is still the head honcho of the Halo franchise.

The video opens without much in the way of surprises for the first full minute. This is mostly material that’s been covered before but does show off a distinctive Ridley Scott sense of style and production. The first true surprise comes at 1:17 in the Halo: Nightfall video with this.

Halo: Nightfall - Lekgolo

Well, that’s something that we haven’t seen previously in the Halo universe. Speculation on Reddit sub-forums for Halo and the Xbox One, as well as in a thread on NeoGAF, first took toward the Flood. However, the general consensus is some form of Lekgolo, the alien worms that come together to form the armored Hunters and Scarabs.

343 Industries Franchise Director also helped lead things in that direction with that direction with the following post on NeoGAF.

“I am not confirming or denying what the thing you see in the footage is, but I would note that Scarabs are also worm colonies. Look closely at the joints.”

Whatever the creature is, it appears it may be the main source of scares for Halo: Nightfall. It likely won’t be the force that Locke and his team of Oni agents has to contend with. A Covenant Spirit troop carrier can be seen at 1:33 in the video hinting at Covenant involvement.

This is further confirmed at 2:06 with an energy sword wielding Elite immediately followed by the same Elite falling while holding either a bomb or some sort of artifact. The armor and design style for the Elite is similar to what was introduced in Halo 4 as part of Jul M’dama’s splinter faction. Will this be what helps lead Locke to the Arbiter?

Halo: Nightfall - Elite

This leads into a final mystery voice asking Locke how he will lead, and for what. It’s unknown if that voice is human or Elite.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be released worldwide on November 11. It includes access to Halo: Nightfall and the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta.
