3D Realms Anthology of 32 Classic PC Games On Sale for 48 Hours
PC Gamers who cut their teeth on DOS prompts and shareware disks will remember the name 3D Realms as one of the most important PC gaming companies that established the medium in the 1990’s. After five years of being in corporate limbo, the studio that birthed classics like Duke Nukem, Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D is back with a big press release and video on the official site. To celebrate the return of the company, the entire 32 classic anthology is available for $19.99 for the next 48 hours.
Originally founded in Garland, Texas as Apogee Software, Ltd. the company would begin with Scott Miller who pioneered what would become the industry standard for shareware distribution. Both as a publisher and developer the company saw great success with companies such as id (Doom, Wolfenstien 3D, Commander Keen), Parallax Software (Descent) which eventually become Volition Software who created the Saints Row franchise and Remedy Entertainment as the publishers of the first Max Payne title.
Many gamers will remember the fiasco that seemed to be the end of the company with the release of Duke Nukem Forever by Gearbox. After the company closed its doors in 2009 a long legal battle between original publisher Take-Two Interactive and Gearbox Studios ensued with the latter finally releasing the game in 2011 as the Inquisitr has reported on previously. The company was purchased by a Danish firm, SDN Invest and with the leadership also came original studio founder Scott Miller. While no new IP was announced, the company is making a show that includes the 32 game 3D Realms Anthology which is on sale for $19.99.
With the exception of Prey and Max Payne the entire back catalog of Apogee and 3D Realms games are available for purchase via digital download as a way to celebrate the return of the company. On top of the digital versions of the classic games, every game is DRM free and has partial controller support.
