Hunter Biden Dishonorably Discharged From Navy Over ‘Positive’ Drug Test?

One of the pains of raising a child is wondering if they will fall victim to the perils of things you’ve warned them against. A Vice President of the United States is no exception, especially if he or she is a parent. Reportedly, Joe Biden’s son was discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserves early this year after failing a drug test. It’s unknown if Vice President Biden’s youngest son was released from the military with a general or dishonorable release.

WSJ covered the story of Joe Biden son‘s discharge from his brief role as a commissioned ensign. It says that sources close to the latest news claim Hunter’s service to his country ended when he failed a mandatory drug screen, which yielded positive results for the narcotic cocaine.

Ensign Hunter, a lawyer by vocation and former lobbyist, signed up for the Navy Reserves when he was 42. According to the Washington Post, Biden’s son needed two waivers: one for his age (maximum enlistment age for non-prior service is 39). The other was needed because Hunter apparently had a past drug-related charge when he was younger.

Sources say Biden’s youngest son failed a required drug test back in June of 2013. However, an additional seven months elapsed before Hunter Biden was discharged from Navy service. And as expected, given the stature of his father, the military discharge proceedings took place quietly without media scrutiny. The younger Biden released a statement after the news broke Thursday.

“[It was] the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge. I respect the Navy’s decision. With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.”

The younger Biden son was one of seven applicants who entered the Reserves under a special program in 2012. Basically, it allowed enlistees to earn direct commissions if they are professionals from the private sector. The leadership positions were granted after a rigorous background check, 12-day training program in Rhode Island and a medical evaluation for fitness in the military.

Joe Biden’s son’s discharge over drug use allegations comes as a surprise because Hunter’s two grandfathers were both in the military. Additionally, his brother Beau Biden is a major in the Delaware National Guard, the state’s Attorney General and a candidate for governor.

Robert Hunter Biden is the second oldest of two other surviving siblings (Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III and Ashley Blazer Biden). VP Biden’s first wife, Neilia, and another child they shared together, Naomi Christina Biden, were killed in 1972 when the driver of a big rig broad-sided their vehicle.
