The world wasn’t exactly shocked when Neil Patrick Harris came out publicly as gay, but this story about how Harris knew he was gay is pretty left field.
The moment he knew he was gay is when Harris shared what the How I Met Your Mother star called a “joke kiss” with actor Burt Reynolds. This wasn’t a smooch shared on screen, but rather a last take that never made it into their 80s detective drama series called B.L. Stryker . The series only lasted for a year but it made a lasting impression on Harris.
In his memoir Choose Your Own Autobiography, the host of the 2015 Academy Awards documents that special moment he shared with Burt Reynolds.
“As a joke at the end of one take, Burt leans over and kisses you square on the mouth… The crew thinks this is very funny, but it makes you uncomfortable. Uncomfortable and, it will ultimately turn out, gay. Burt Reynolds’ kiss makes you gay.”
That said, it seems as though this tale was just one of several indications that he might be gay. The Tony winner told his mother years prior that he might like men. That said, Harris told The Daily Mail that he didn’t realize that he was gay, and in fact just identified himself as bisexual until realizing that his own sexual identity was, in fact, gay.
“The most gratifying reaction was the deafening silence of hundreds of millions of Americans thinking to themselves, who gives a s**t’?”
In his memoir he details how hard it was to come to terms, but finally comes to the conclusion that he’s happy in his life now that he’s settled and married with children.
“You’ve come a long way from the anonymous skulker trolling the AOL chat rooms… You are gay. You are gay. You know that you are; you like that you are; you’re proud that you are. You are totally gay, and now you are totally gay and totally in love, and it’s wonderful. After a long internal journey, you now embrace being gay, recognizing it as a wonderful and integrally important component part of the totality that is you.”
As The Inquisitr reported , Harris was wed to his longtime partner David Burtka a few weeks ago in Italy. It seems as though family life is doing well too. Just the other day Neil posted a photo of their twins Harper and Gideon, who just celebrated their fourth birthday.
