‘Blood Moon’ Vs. ‘Pumpkin Sun’: Which Celestial Body Reigns Supreme This Halloween Season?

The moon was at its scariest when it appeared as a “Blood Moon” earlier this month. However, not to be outdone, it appears even the sun is getting in the Halloween spirit this year. New photos released by NASA show what looks to be the sun trying to give us all a little scare as a creepy Jack-O-Lantern.

NASA recently released a photo set called “Pumpkin Sun” that shows creepy-looking images of the sun that resemble Jack-O-Lanterns. The photos were snapped on October 8 and were described as very “Halloween” in appearance.

NASA says the images depict areas of activity on the sun’s surface.

“Active regions on the sun combined to look something like a Jack-O-Lantern’s face on Oct. 8, 2014. The active regions appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy — markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona. This image blends together two sets of wavelengths at 171 and 193 Angstroms, typically colorized in gold and yellow, to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance.”

Check out the “Pumpkin Sun” photos along with some of the scariest “Blood Moon” images in the gallery below.

What do you think? Who won the battle of the scariest celestial body? Was it the “Pumpkin Sun” or “Blood Moon” that reigned supreme?
