Zombie Attack In Kansas? Governor Declares October As Zombie Preparedness Month

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback will soon declare the month of October as Zombie Preparedness Month. And while it may sound silly, it’s actually being used as a method of attracting people and making them aware of how to prepare for some kind of attack or natural disaster, whether it’s zombie-related or not.

According to a statement, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) came up with Zombie Preparedness Month as a way to educate the people of the state about preparing for some kind of disaster. On September 26, Brownback will sign the proclamation that officially makes October Zombie Preparedness Month.

“If you’re prepared for zombies, you’re prepared for anything,” reads the theme of the event.

Devan Tucking-Strickler, a human services officer for KDEM, added that the zombie preparedness event has been successful in terms of attendance and educating the people of Kansas on how to be prepared for any kind of disaster.

“If you’re equipped to handle the zombie apocalypse then you’re prepared for tornadoes, severe storms, fire and any other natural disaster Kansas usually faces,” she said. “This is a fun and low-stress way to get families involved, and past turnouts have proven it to be effective.”

A survival kit would include three days worth of supplies and an emergency plan, the statement reads. Kansas residents who want to learn more on zombie preparedness can attend the event on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Crestview Shelter House in Topeka.

This is not the first time that Kansas has celebrated Zombie Preparedness Month. Back in 2011, Emergency Management reported on the event, informing readers the state had just declared October 29 to be Zombie Preparedness Day.

“People are building their disaster kits and making their disaster plans without even thinking about it because it’s fun; it’s zombies,” Strickler said in the 2011 report.

Kansas is not the only place that has used zombie preparedness as a method of informing people on how to survive any kind of disaster. As The Inquisitr reported back in 2012, the Department of Homeland Security had an online seminar that taught emergency preparedness, and it used a zombie attack as its example.

“While the walking dead may not be first on your list of local hazards, zombie preparedness messages and activities have proven to be an effective way of engaging new audiences who may not be familiar with what to do before, during, or after a disaster, and to inject a little levity into preparedness while still informing and educating people,” the flier for the seminar read.
