‘Zoolander 2’ News Round Up: Will Ferrell’s Mugatu And More

Looks like the next Zoolander film is actually happening. Of course we can’t know anything for sure until the director says “action,” but it looks like the old team behind the first film has the ball rolling.

Actor and comedian Will Ferrell leaked the news that his popular character Mugatu will be in the sequel of the new Zoolander film.

Ferrell told JoBlo during an interview that the script for the sequel is completed, and that he’s set to return as the silver haired fashion designer.

“We are actually supposed to do a read-through of a sequel script soon, and Mugatu is a part of it.”

In the original film, Mugatu tries to brainwash Ben Stiller’s Zoolander so he can continue to use children as laborers to put out his clothing line. Although we don’t know the extent of Ferrell’s role in the Zoolander sequel, we do have some information.

Zoolander 2 will see the models trying to compete with younger models as another company tries to cut off their model mojo. Back in December, while promoting his film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Ben Stiller told reporters that the project was on hold, but that was some time ago, and anything can happen in that time.

“There’s a script we like, but I don’t want to force it, because people who love that movie really love it, so I want to make sure we do the sequel the right way.”

For instance, The Leftovers star Justin Theroux blew up, so perhaps that actually pushed the process along, as Theroux is rumored to still be in the circle for directing the project. Last month Theroux was hesitant to talk about the sequel but he did confirm that they were talking about it.

“Yeah, we’ve got a script for the sequel, and we’ve just been in talks again. We’re trying to sharpen it and hone it and, actually, I don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like it actually might be starting to get up and running,” Theroux said.

As for whether or not Theroux will direct Ferrell and Stiller in the Zoolander sequel, that remains unknown. Jennifer Aniston’s fiancé didn’t seem convinced that he would have enough time to direct the sequel if The Leftovers was renewed for season 2. That said, he thought Stiller could reprise his role as director for Zoolander 2 if his schedule didn’t work out.

At the time Theroux told Vulture if Stiller signed on as director it would be “awesome.”
