Ben Affleck Talks About Why He Took Role In ‘Batman V Superman’
Ben Affleck had forsworn wearing spandex after Daredevil, but shocked the world, when it was announced he would play one of the most famous superheroes of them all in Batman v Superman. When he took the role of Batman, he not only had to fill some big shoes, he had to convince fans he could do it credibly.
Before Batfleck (as many started calling him after his casting), Christian Bale swept audiences off their feet with his portrayal of the Dark Knight in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. To many, he was the ultimate Batman. However, as it is often the case, we have heard that before and we will just have to wait and see what Affleck does with this very interesting role.
We haven’t heard much from either Ben Affleck or Henry Cavill — who returns to reprise his role as Superman — in Zack Snyder’s mega blockbuster sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But now that Affleck is promoting his new film, Gone Girl, he is being asked questions about his upcoming role.
The production is currently being shot in Detroit, and we have seen plenty of behind-the-scenes photos, but we haven’t seen Batman yet. We did, however, see Affleck’s Bruce Wayne in some of the earlier photos captured by fans while the scenes were happening on the Motor City’s streets.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times (via Comic Book), Ben Affleck talked a little about why he went back to playing a superhero.
“To get the exposure to a movie of this scale is an education,” Affleck said.
The Oscar-winning actor/director added that you cannot underestimate what comes with being involved in a film such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Even though he enjoys both art films and massively commercial movies, in the end, this production will help with his own future directorial projects.
Affleck clarified that he doesn’t look down on the role of Batman because of its trivial nature, and he actually shares a personality trait with the moody superhero.
“I think it’s a necessity, historically, in the tradition of these films. For me, anger is so deeply buried and contained that when it does kind of come out, it comes out in stronger bursts. I tend to be respectful, polite, get along, put up with, put up with, put up with…then, when it finally emerges, it’s not something I have a ton of control over. I’m not gonna go into a Wolverine berserker rage, but I do have a, I do…”
Ben Affleck says that he considers this part of him a flaw, but it could help him channel what many are hinting will be this new Batman. The rumor is that Batman will confront Superman about the massive havoc he created in his epic fight with General Zod in Man of Steel, initially at least. They are expected to join forces later on for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
