The Philadelphia Eagles come into tonight’s game looking to build on an impressive come from behind victory in week one, but they’ll have to do it short handed. Their offensive line in particular will be playing short staffed, after week one injuries to Allen Barbre and All-Pro Evan Mathis and the suspension of Lane Johnson for using performance enhancing drugs. Mathis is out half the season, Johnson is gone for three more games, and Barbre is expected to be gone for the rest of the season.
If they want to get off to that 2-0 start — according to a Yahoo Sports article, it would be their first 2-0 start since 1993 — they’ll have to get past the 0-1 Indianapolis Colts, perennially one of the strongest teams in the NFL. The Colts don’t make a habit of dropping their first two games. The Yahoo Sports article points out that they have only started 0-2 one other time in the past 16 years. The last time the Colts dropped their first two games was in 2011, a season in which they had to do without starting quarterback Peyton Manning. The Colts finished that year 3-13… poorly enough that they were able to draft current quarterback Andrew Luck.
The Andrew Luck-led Indianapolis Colts are heavy favorites in this game, despite falling short in a comeback attempt against the Denver Broncos, led by their former QB Peyton Manning. The Colts lost to Denver by a touchdown, 31-24.
The Indianapolis Colts bring one of the better pass rushing defenses into tonight’s game, even with the loss of Robert Mathis to suspension. Look for them to bring plenty of pressure on the Eagles running game, especially given Philadelphia’s depleted offensive line.
With a win, Philadelphia would hold sole possession of first place in the NFC East. A loss would leave them tied for first place with the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. A win for the Colts would put Indianapolis in a tie for second place in the AFC South with the Tennessee Titans. A loss would put them in the cellar tied for last place in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
