William And Kate Wanted Two Children Close In Age, Will Pippa Be Godmother To The New Royal Baby?

While the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just announced the royal pregnancy, William and Kate may have long been planning on having a second child. According to a new report from The Mirror, the couple wanted Prince George to be a big brother sooner rather than later. Both William and Kate have siblings to whom they are close in age, and they wanted that same experience for their own children.

As The Mirror reports, Kate and her sister Pippa are just one year apart, while William and his younger brother Harry have less than three years between them. Prince Harry turns 30 on Monday, while Pippa turned 31 on September 6, mere days before the news broke about the new royal baby.

The Mirror reported the Duchess is said to be about seven weeks along in her pregnancy.

The unnamed source said to be close to the royals told The Mirror:

“Kate and William’s pregnancy is great news and seemingly out of the blue. But the truth is I’m not at all surprised. They’ve both made no secret of the fact that they enjoy having siblings close in age and that they share very special relationships with them.”

In fact, as The Inqusitr previously revealed, Kate Middleton is herself one of three children — she and Pippa have a younger brother, James — and she wants Prince George to have two more siblings. With public delight at Prince George’s birth and the announcement of a new royal on the way, Kate and William can rest assured they will be supported no matter how many children they choose to have.

What may be more mysterious is whether Pippa Middleton will become godparent to the new royal baby. The London Evening Standard notes that the Duke and Duchess broke with tradition with Prince George, choosing close friends to be their firstborn’s seven godparents. Earlier generations of royals had made those choices based on influence and position rather than personal relationship. Despite this change, Pippa was not named a godparent.

The Standard said this was because the royal couple felt Pippa was already overwhelmed with media attention after her sister’s nuptials. While she did not make Prince George’s cadre of godparents, she was one of the few attendees at Prince George’s christening last year. In further break with tradition, William and Kate invited only a small group of onlookers that included the godparents and each parent’s immediate family members.
