Groundskeeper Willie Bares All In New Come-Out Statement

Groundskeeper Willie of the Simpsons has come out in favor of Scottish independence, calling on all Scots to vote for independence on September 18. The video, which is nearly two minutes long, features Groundskeeper Willie in his characteristic brash humor making his feelings known in no uncertain terms.

“Scotland is home to two-thirds of Europe’s oil reserves. Notice how in no country rich in oil do the men wear pants.”

Groundskeeper Willie also throws his hat in the ring to become the next leader of Scotland after Scottish independence is gained. He says he won’t back down to world leaders because he hasn’t a clue who they are and he’s not willing to learn. Plus, he’s lived in America for most of his life and has seen first hand how not to run a country.

The video, produced as an online commercial for the long-running television show, The Simpsons, and released by Fox, has been making the rounds on social media and websites like Mashable.

The Groundskeeper Willie video is typical of Simpsons political statements wrapped in a humorous message. This particular commercial is also helping push the 26th season of The Simpsons, a show on which Groundskeeper Willie has gained a loyal following of fans.

“It’s not a tattoo, it’s a birthmark.”

The Scottish referendum to which Groundskeeper Willie is referring is a simple yes or no question that will appear on the ballot this September 18. All residents in Scotland aged 16 or older (about 4 million people) can vote and a simple majority will carry.

The case for Scottish independence has been long-running with factors like economic rights, control of North Sea oil, and more playing a role. Support for the Groundskeeper Willie point of view (sans his leadership role) has been growing in Scotland as polls show steady growth in favor of a vote for independence. A poll by Survation and published in the Telegraph today shows the “obviously wrong choice” Groundskeeper Willie refers to is still carrying the day at about 54 percent. High voter turnout is expected for the referendum. Mashable reports that young voters in Scotland make up a large contingent of the pro-independence votes.

Of course, with Groundskeeper Willie throwing his hat in the ring to not only support Scottish independence, but to lead Scotland forward once it’s an independent country, the “Aye or Die” vote may carry the day next week.
