Jamie Dornan Getting An Oscar For ‘Fifty Shades’? Fat Chance!

Is Jamie Dornan on his way to receiving an Oscar award for Fifty Shades of Grey? It’s highly unlikely, but according to the film’s screenwriter Kelly Marcel, he certainly deserves one for the raunchy film.

According to Us Weekly, the screenwriter sat down for an interview with Reza Aslan of Hollywood’s DBA venue for the Writer’s Room series, and that’s when she revealed that she thinks Dornan deserves an Oscar award.

When discussing how Dornan played the S&M obsessed business man Christian Grey, Marcel said:

“Apparently Jamie is great at being soft and hard at the same time,” Marcel continued, stealing a phrase from Fifty Shades. “Which is hard to do for an actor!”

She continued:

“He’s going to get an Oscar!”

Let’s take this comment not for what it is, which we’re guessing is hyperbole, and actually break this one down. We’ve seen the trailer for the film, and it doesn’t have Oscar all over it. A fun night with the girls? Sure. A film that will get The Academy excited? Absolutely not.

For those who aren’t familiar with the adaptation, Fifty Shades of Grey was originally a novel cheekily described as “mommy porn” for its very sexual content. Written by new author EL James, the book follows controlling businessman Christian Grey who takes virginal Anastasia Steele under his wing and unleashes her “inner goddess” as they delve into the world of S&M and Grey’s mommy issues.

You can argue that actors have been nominated for films that don’t jive with the Academy, but this is like saying the cast of The Expendables 3 is expected to be up for a few Best Supporting nominations. It’s just not going to happen.

Fans are already reacting to this outrageous claim:

Another fan tweeted:

“OSCAR WORTHY F—ING HELL – then again, you NEED that level of loyal delusion to cope with working in that…”

While another fan marched to the beat of their own drum:

Aside from the material, Jamie Dornan doesn’t have a chance because the Valentine’s Day release date is not an Oscar friendly release. The Academy mostly considers films that are released from July to December 25. This is why you’ll see most studios rushing to get their films in before the cut off date so they will have a shot at the gold. For instance, when Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island was pushed back from October 2 2009 to February 19 2010, it was considered a huge loss for both Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.

We rest our case.
