Gamescom: ‘Destiny’ Multiplayer Provides Spin On Standard Gametypes

Bungie finally revealed Tuesday at Gamescom all of the gametypes that will be available for Destiny. The trailer shows that the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 shooter takes a couple of the traditional game modes common to first-person shooters and puts a slight spin on them.

There were seven game modes announced for the Crucible, Destiny’s multiplayer. Beta players should already be familiar with two of them.

Skirmish is described as “Small team tactics. Kill the enemy. Revive teammates.” This sounds a little bit like the Gears of War multiplayer where players could revive downed teammates before they bleed or were finished off by the opposing team. It will be three versus three matches, however.

Rumble is given the tag, “Kill everything. Watch your back.” This is your standard free-for-all mode with six players and doesn’t currently look like it has been given any sort of additional flavor.

Salvage is “Salvage relics. Kill enemy players. Revive teammates.” This builds on Skirmish by adding in the need to have your Ghost recover a relic. It looks like it will be a race to different points on the map to defend your Ghost while it recovers and teleports a relic while the other team tries to stop it.

Clash says, “All-out team warfare. Destroy the enemy.” This is another mode that doesn’t appear to offer a different spin on a standard mode. It seems to be straight up team deathmatch at first glance.

Combined Arms ups Clash a notch with, “All-out team warfare with vehicles. Destroy the enemy.” Again, this is another standard team deathmatch mode, but with vehicles.

Control is familiar to Destiny beta players where they “Capture Zones to increase points for every kill.” This is a domination gametype but instead of bleeding out points by holding zones, you get more points per kill with every zone owned. During the beta, players received an extra 100 points per kill for two zones held and an extra 200 points per kill for three zones.

Finally, the Iron Banner is the chance to use the full power of the gear players have acquired. It is described as, “Power matters. Earn epic rewards & gear.” In non-Iron Banner matches, player’s equipment and weapons are leveled out. That’s not the case in this mode and, based on the beta, will make players either feel god-like or ant-like depending on the match they fall in. Of course, the whole reason to participate in this mode is for the chance to earn some rare and powerful gear like the following.

Destiny – Efrideet’s Spear
Destiny – Iron Regalia Vestments

How teams are balanced will make a difference in these modes as well. While Warlocks were definitely popular during the beta, players will not want to go with a team full of them against a team featuring all three classes.

What do you think of the Destiny multiplayer mode, Crucible? Is there enough there to keep your interest or will you likely stick to the PvE modes likes Missions, Strikes, and Raids? Sound off in the comments below.
