Buffalo Bills Fans Are The Drunkest, Claims Fan Who Went To All NFL Stadiums

Congratulations Buffalo Bills fans, you’re No. 1 in at least one category!

Sean MacDonald, a fan who has attended all 122 stadiums in the NFL, MLB, NBA and NFL, decided to spend 2013 going to every stadium in the NFL. He ended up writing a book called Ultimate Football Road Trip, and in it claimed that Buffalo Bills fans were top in one important category — the drunkest.

MacDonald attended the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals at Ralph Wilson Stadium on October 13, 2013. He said Buffalo fans were consistently drunk, from the early morning of game day until after the final whistle sounded (which in this case was a heartbreaking overtime loss).

MacDonald wrote:

“But what I remember most of all here is the wild atmosphere, one of the craziest I saw during my travels, with much of it due to excessive alcohol consumption. As you can probably guess, Bills fans are the drunkest I witnessed on my trip. That is true before, during and after the game. I even saw the Bills twice on the road and this observation was merely confirmed. Unfortunately, most of them are unable to hold their liquor and lose control, becoming a danger to others or to themselves.

That has certainly been the case lately. Last season a drunk fan slid down a railing on the upper level, falling more than 30 feet below into the crowd, where he injured another fan.

The year before, a fan was ejected from the team’s Thursday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins for being too drunk. He was found the next day in a nearby stream, where he had drowned.

The Buffalo Bills have taken measures to attack the reputation of having the drunkest fans, restricting drinking in the stadium and adding security. But MacDonald said it’s had little effect.

He wrote:

“Based on what I saw last year, little has changed. Inside the stadium seemed like a free-for-all at times, with fans moving around constantly and far too many in the advanced stages of inebriation, especially in the lower level end zone seats. Beer was constantly being spilled on the concourse and stairways to the seats, making things that much more dangerous. Buffalo, like the many industrial cities in the cold northeast, is a hard-drinking town, but too many fans are simply out of control at Bills games.”

While the Buffalo Bills fans were the drunkest, MacDonald said other teams had their problems as well. He noted that the New York Jets fans were also known to drink, but were not as jovial as Bills fans. He told the New York Post that Jets fans were “negative… humorless, perhaps.”
