‘Star Wars Rebels’: Watch The Official Seven Minute Preview Right Now!

Star Wars Rebels, the new animated show for Disney XD, was given a surprise preview last night after the premiere of Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars, and you can watch it right now if you missed it!

Star Wars Rebels takes place in the time period between Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope according to Deadline. As such, the evil Galactic Empire is in control of the galaxy and a ragtag team of Rebels are doing their best to foil their plans. Considering the new JJ Abrams Star Wars film, Episode VII, takes place forty years after the events of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, few, if any of the characters from Star Wars Rebels are likely to appear in the new film.

However, Star Wars Rebels takes us back to a time that hasn’t been previously showcased in a Star Wars animated feature. The landscape of Star Wars Rebels is extremely familiar to fans of the original trilogy. Stormtroopers abound and familiar Star Destroyers and TIE Fighters fly overhead with their characteristic sound effects.

The executive producer of Lucasfilm’s extremely popular and well received cartoon, Clone Wars, Dave Filoni, is heading up the team behind Star Wars Rebels. The screenwriter from X-Men: Days of Future Past is writing the initial stories, and, like the critically acclaimed Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels isn’t just for kids. A combination of great storytelling, unusual camera shots, and POV elements make the animated show a treat to watch. Star Wars Rebels was one of the few Star Wars nuggets to hit San Diego’s Comic-Con this year according to Screen Rant.

Star Wars Rebels is set for a one-hour premiere on the Disney Channel in October, before moving over to Disney XD.

In the official seven minute clip from the Star Wars Rebels premiere, we’re introduced to Ezra, (voiced by Taylor Cray) who steals a speeder bike from the Empire, only to be cut off by a Jedi named Kanan (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.). The idea that all Jedi’s – other than Yoda and Obi-Wan – weren’t destroyed in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith when the Emperor dispatched his infamous Order 66, is intriguing.

The time period offered on the show gives way to the possibility that we may see some more familiar characters on the show. For one thing, the Emperor is in charge of the galaxy, and for another, Darth Vader is his right hand man. Chewbacca – portrayed in both the original and sequel trilogies – would also fit the time period. Only time will tell!

Here is the seven minute official preview of Star Wars Rebels. Enjoy!
