Bruno Mars’ The Lazy Song Gets MTV Music Awards Nomination


The music video for Bruno Mars’ hit track, The Lazy Song, choreographed by 25-year-old Mars and Poreotics, was nominated for 2011’s MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography. The Poreotics, the winners of America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5, are featured in the video (seen below) alongside Bruno decked out in monkey masks, flannels and wearing their trademark shades.

The Poreotics dance crew is comprised of Chad Mayate, Matt “Dumbo” Nguyen, Justin “Jet Li” Valles, Charles Nguyen, Lawrence Devera, and Can Nguyen. Dumbo, Can, and Charles – who are of Vietnamese descent – are from Orange County while Chad, Jet Li, and Lawrence – of Filipino descent – reside in Los Angeles County. Additionally, Bruno Mars is also of Filipino and Puerto Rican descent and was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii.

“We actually choreographed with Bruno Mars and filmed all in one day,” recalls Justin “Jet Li” Valles, one of the six members of Poreotics. “It was an honor to be able to work with Bruno Mars and even more of an honor to be nominated especially since we are all Asian American. We’re all thankful that the whole world enjoyed it as well.”

MTV announced the nominees for “Best Choreography” on the evening of Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Other nominees for the award include Beyonce’s Run the World (Girls) choreographed by Frank Gatson, Britney Spears’ Till the World Ends choreographed by Brian Freedman, Lady Gaga’s Judas with choreography by Laurieann Gibson, and LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett and Goon Party Rock Anthem with choreography by Hokuto Konishi. The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live Tonight, August 28th at 9pm from the the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
