It seems that television musicals are the latest craze when it comes to specials on the networks. Here on The Inquisitr, we reported on the first major musical special, The Sound of Music Live starring Carrie Underwood. Despite the television special’s success, the Von Trapp family actually didn’t like it, or at least they didn’t like Carrie Underwood. We also reported that another musical movie is coming to television too: Grease. This time, Fox will be the ones to show the popularity of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies.
Now it seems that NBC, the company behind The Sound of Music Live, has revealed their next musical and it is located in the second star to the right and straight on to a morning. Peter Pan Live is set to release later on this year on December 4th. But that is old news. What is new is they now found the actor to fill the shoes of the most notorious pirate of them all, Captain Hook, and he will be played by Christopher Walken.
According to an article by AZ Central, Christopher Walken has been tapped to play the arch rival to Peter Pan. Walken himself actually had a statement pertaining to being cast as he said the following:
“I started my career in musicals and it’s wonderful after all this time, at this point in my career, to be in this classic musical I watched as a child and to work with Neil Meron and Craig Zadan again after Hairspray. It’s a chance to put on my tap shoes again.”
For those who didn’t know, Christopher Walken played Wilbur Turnblad, the father of the main character, Tracy Edna Turnblad. Though just a supporting actor, his professionalism playing opposite John Travolta as Edna Turnblad (the role of Tracy’s mom is played by a man) showed because… well… they are two guys and one is dressed as a big woman (which is nothing new if you seen Big Momma’s House and Mrs. Doubtfire).
In an update by IGN, it looks like that conversations between the higher-ups and the lead for Peter Pan have begun too. It is interesting to see who will be the one to go toe-to-toe with Christopher Walken. If the play follows in the footsteps of the stage musical, Peter Pan will be played by a woman which was done back in the past because women generally were lighter making it easier to do some of the flying tricks they did since they were connected by strings at their limbs instead of just a harness. The rumor is that Kristen Bell, famous for Frozen and Veronica Mars, may take the role but that is not confirmed.
Peter Pan Live will be aired on NBC on December 4, 2014. A time is not readily available yet.
