‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season Three Cancelled?! Say It Isn’t So!

Not all good things can last forever. At least that’s what spoof news outlet Empire News would have you believe. In a recent article posted to the site’s website, the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings is supposedly quoted as saying:

“We regret to inform Netflix members that ‘Orange is the New Black’ has been permanently cancelled. Also, starting September 1st, 2014, past episodes will no longer be available for streaming on Netflix.”

The article would further quote the CEO making some borderline misogynistic things about the show that is about time served in a woman’s prison:

A woman’s place is in the home, in the kitchen, taking care of children. A woman in jail? How does anyone even watch this show in the first place? It’s like we took everything bad about ‘OZ,’ and make this show with the leftovers.

The show is, of course, based on a memoir published by Piper Kerman with the title Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.

According to the Metro UK, the resulting outcry took Twitter and other social media outlets by storm. Fans took to their Twitter accounts lamenting the alleged cancellation of the show:

“Netflix Canceled orange is the new black? They can’t do this to me.” @Alejandraiscute

“Dude, they canceled orange is the new black, what is life.” @YeseniaaBruno

“Orange is the New Black is being canceled my feelings are officially hurt.” @_Kailynn

The Independent reports that several Netflix subscribers have even threatened to cancel their subscriptions in reaction to the news.

The ensuing onslaught and social media backlash caused the show’s official Twitter page to release the following photo of stars Uzo Aduba (“Crazy Eyes”) and Danielle Brooks (“Tastee”) on the set filming season three:

The official Twitter page for OITNB would also post the following tweet to fans to help assuage their worries:

“Don’t worry, dandelions! @OITNB is not cancelled.”

Accompanying the tweet was a link to official Instagram account for the show, which documents the production progress of the show. This apparent hoax on the behalf of Empire News comes on the heels of the show being nominated for 13 Emmy awards. For some actors on the show, such as Kate Mulgrew, this is their first nomination.

The spook news outlet is also known for posting such outrageous headlines as “Colorado Becomes First State to Legalize Crystal Meth” and “Pennsylvania Burger Kind Manager Fired for Eating a Big Mac.”

So, to all the die-hard OITNB fans out there, it’s safe to say that the show has not been cancelled. You may now return to Netflix and re-subscribe to your favorite streaming video service.
