‘Star Wars’ Museum Finds A Home, Find Out Where

After much uncertainty, Star Wars creator George Lucas found a home for his museum, and the choice may come as a surprise to some. The famed director was looking for the perfect spot to display his very large memorabilia collection.

The top two contenders were Chicago and San Francisco, but Lucas finally decided on the Windy City. Yes, those in the Midwest are jumping for joy as Chicago will be the home of the very cool Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

For many weeks, it was unclear whether the Star Wars creator would choose Chicago or San Francisco as the home of his museum and some believe his wife — a native of Chicago — could have influenced the decision. Lucas announced his desire to open the museum earlier this year, clarifying that it’s more than just a Star Wars museum.

On the museum’s website, Lucasmuseum.org Lucas’ memorabilia collection is described as follows:

“The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will be a gathering place to experience narrative art and the evolution of moving images – from illustration to cinema to the digital mediums of the future. The museum’s seed collection – a gift from founder George Lucas – spans a century-and-a-half and features the images and the mediums that have profoundly shaped our cultural heritage. The foundational collection will continue to grow and evolve as the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art acquires more works.”

The website has the following announcement regarding the selection of Chicago as home of the Star Wars museum:

“The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art (LMNA) is honored to be partnering with the city of Chicago and the many cultural, civic and community groups that will work with the Museum. Public outreach and educational programming are central to the mission and public service goals of the Museum. The LMNA will support the stunning innovations of the digital age while emphasizing the same values that distinguish Chicago from other great cities: community involvement, diversity, and a commitment to excellence in art, architecture, and creativity.”

Even though the Star Wars museum is not just about the mega blockbuster franchise, fans of Lucas and the trilogies are more than excited to have a place to visit and see what the director has collected through the years. The city of Chicago is expected to benefit to the tune of $2 billion to $2.5 billion in additional revenue for a $1 billion investment, according to Chicago Business via NPR.

The land acquired to build the Star Wars museum is reportedly located along the picturesque Lake Michigan shore, near other popular attractions. San Francisco lost its bid to house the building when they rejected Lucas’ first choice of a location near the Golden Gate Bridge, as reported by The Inquisitr at the time.
