Metamorphosis Music: Katy Perry Launches New Label Under Capitol Records

Katy Perry, who, up until recently, has recorded her own music under the Capitol/Universal umbrella has inked a deal with Capitol to launch her own label, appropriately named Metamorphosis Music. During a press interview earlier, the “Dark Horse” singer also announced that the first artist that she will be signing is singer-songwriter Ferras.

Additionally, Ferras, under the Metamorphosis brand has released a self-titled EP which is immediately available for digital download as of yesterday. The new record includes the single “Legends Never Die” which is a duet with Perry who also acts as executive producer on the single. Previously, Ferras was signed to Capitol Records in 2007 and released an album in 2008 which included a single by the name of “Hollywood’s Not America”. The track received moderate recognition for being the exit song during the semi-final round in the seventh season of American Idol.

During a conversation with Rolling Stone, Katy Perry sang the praises of Ferras:

Ferras is a man with a message and a unique, lyrical way of communicating his perspective on life that makes you feel connected to every note when you listen. [The EP’s] ‘Speak in Tongues’ is a song with raw emotional power that I wish I wrote. I believe he is going to be an important artist to watch unfold. I am so ecstatic the world gets to hear his music now both online and on tour with me.

It seems that Ferras couldn’t be happier that he is working with Katy Perry. He told Rolling Stone that “her instincts are really on point. She is very blunt and doesn’t sugarcoat things, which I appreciate. Also, she gave me the freedom to do what I wanted musically and was a natural partner.”

Katy Perry is about to embark on a North American tour which starts in North Carolina on June 22nd. Joining her for portions of her tour as an opening act are Tegan and Sara and Kacey Musgraves. For more details on when Katy Perry will come to your city, check this listing.

In unrelated news, Katy Perry has been immortalized in a painting by Will Cotton, which is titled “Cupcake Katy” and is now on display alongside other music greats such as Lena Horne and Joni Mitchell at the National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition is a limited engagement, running from June 18th through July 6th.
