21-Time Felon Goes From Inmate To Local Celebrity In A Story That Will Warm Your Heart

This is the story of Jose Melendez, a 21-time felon who went from inmate to local celebrity working as a sign holder for a jewelry shop.

Earning the moniker of Mr. Gold, this inspiring account of a man who dons a gold suit while holding an advertising sign on a Central Florida street corner makes for a feel good story.

A tale that features prison time, two appearances on the Maury Povich Show for paternity tests, and a jewelry store that took a chance on a felon, Mr. Gold has become an inspiring adventure that is beautifully captured in this brilliantly made documentary.

Unable to find employment since being released from prison 18 months prior, Melendez spotted a jewelry store looking for a sign holder.

“I went in there and asked the lady, “Ya’ll hiring for the sign holder?” he said.

Not asking any questions, the shop-owner replies “Can you work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday?”

Taking to the street corner, Melendez got to work.

Known for his unique “hat flip” and gold suit, Melendez quickly noticed that his character was becoming a staple of the town and a joy to those who drive by him on a daily basis.

“This character was really for real,” said Melendez. “People were taking this character to the heart. I needed to embrace it.”

When asked what memory stands out to him since he began this journey, Melendez says,

“I think the most memorable thing about Mr. Gold right is, I was in Target one day and this lady came and told me her son never talks around the house, he’s going to therapy right now, but every time he sees me the first thing he says is “Mom, there goes Mr. Gold!”

According to a press release by filmmaker Brian Carlson:

“The four-minute film weaves a story even more interesting than Melendez’ shimmering attire. In and out of prison most of his life, twice a guest on the Maury Povich show and self-described as “from the neighborhood,” Melendez was initially wary of the new job. Then drivers responded. And Mr. Gold was born.”

Mr. Gold continues to work the street corner every day, even coming in early to help count gold and set up displays according to Carlson.

This story of redemption and perseverance is a testament that it’s never too late to create something special and meaningful to those around you. Once a felon with a long rap sheet, Mr. Gold has found new life on this Central Florida street corner.
