Fans can watch the final round of the 2014 U.S. Open live online and see whether Martin Kaymer can hold on and play his way to a championship.

On Saturday Kaymer overcame the odds, including a bogey on his first hole and a tee shot on No. 4 that left his ball in a sandy patch with a difficult play. But Kaymer played his way out of trouble, escaping with only a bogey and then following it up with an eagle. He also got a birdie on his final hole for a 2-over 72, still good enough for a five-shot lead overall.

“I kept it very well together,” said Kaymer.

Fans who watch the U.S. Open live online could also see another unlikely winner. Erik Compton, at two-time heart transplant recipient, is just behind the lead at 3-under 207.

Compton said if he were to win, it would be a testament to all those who helped him through the ordeal.

“If I were to win the tournament, it would be obviously something that would be extremely special, not only for me, but for my family and for those who have been around me, and I think also for the community and those who have been through some tough times,” Compton said. “I might just sail off and never play golf again.”

The field was competitive but the course difficult, with only six players remaining under par at the start of the final round on Sunday.

Kaymer said he didn’t mind the difficult course.

“It would be nice if they make it difficult again,” Kaymer said of the pins, several of which were on the edges of the Donald Ross turtleback greens. “Because then it’s all about ball-striking. I enjoy playing those courses a lot more than just a putting competition…. So I hope they put them in tough positions. Not as tough as today. It would be nice if we could have some kind of a chance once in a while. But that is what you get at the U.S. Open. It’s OK. You just have to play very well.”
